Remote Community Turn Key Information kiosk and Business Centre

Challenge:

The Queensland Government instigated an initiative to implement computing business centres across the Torres Strait Islands. The purpose was to bring facilities to the Island communities that would provide the people and the businesses with ready access to office applications and Internet services. Given the remoteness of the Torres Strait Islands and easy to use and easy to maintain solution was imperative.

Solution:

In partnership with Sun Microsystems, Aeco Pacific custom developed a system based on Sun hardware leveraging thin client and Smart Card technology matched with Linux desktop capabilities and an Administrative Application for managing users plus, providing printing, scanning and CD services. Aeco also provided training, installation and ongoing support services to TSIMA. Aeco's expertise and methodologies to develop the total business solution coupled with Sun's technology effectness reduces the support and administrative load, with only one copy of the application and operating system being required to be installed and maintained. Also, user administration is reduced through the use of Smart Cards. An authorised user can log onto any terminal and they can access the desktop from their personel setup restored.
